Mixed Media on Canvas. Photo inspiration by kind permission of Mike Martin, Bristol
Category: Landscapes,
I ran a photo and painting competition at work and the phootgraph that this was based on was one of the entries. Over a couple of months I would find myself thinking about this photograph and wondering how hard it would be to paint. Unusually for me I did quite a detailed charcoal drawing on the canvas before fixing with Matt medium. Then I went quite dark with oayne’s grey and pthalo blue mixed but using copious amounts of extender fluid gave me the depth of colour but the faint coverage I was after.
I had to leave it to dry for most of the day before beginning the fog. I made the mistake of making the fog white but eventually got darker and darker. It is strange to paint something then cover most of it up.
I love the trees disappearing and the hint of the street behind. But most of all I love those massive horns rising out of the mist. A modern iconic view of Bristol.
