A Day Out on Hamble Beach

December 2013

Acrylic and textured media on canvas.

Category: ,

This is the second picture I have ever painted in acrylic. In the summer of 2013 we visited our family in Southampton and in order to salvage the sanity of my parents we took the kids out to Hamble Beach for the day. The beach sits opposite Fawley Oil Refinery and is primarily stone and shells. We beach-combed all afternoon, collecting oyster shells, periwinkles and oh so many stones with holes in.

In the background you can see my brother in law, Louie, hunting for skimming stones. My sister Zoe is bending to remove the stones from niece’s sandals while my son, Harry, looks on. The child in white (such a bad colour for the beach, let alone one opposite an oil refinery) is Joshua. This photo perfectly captured the day and was my first real attempt at painting an entire scene, containing lots of people who would know if I painted something “wrong”.
